But for very different roles. This will be an intriguing offseason for the Mets. While a potential work stoppage looms over MLB, the club will be looking to turn things around after an unbelievably disappointing showing in 2026, which followed a 2025 campaign that concluded with an epic collapse over the final two months.Obviously, improving the roster is the plan, but before they do that, they must find a new manager. After firing Carlos Mendoza at the end of June, his replacement, Andy Green, has done a solid job in the role. However, he’s made it clear over the last month that he plans to return to his desk in the team’s front office after the season.Since Mendoza’s ouster, there has been a ton of speculation about who could be his full-time successor. The names most often linked to the job are former Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora, team legend and new Hall of Famer Beltran, and St. Louis Cardinals icon Pujols.Beltran actually had the job in 2019, but he stepped down from the position soon after over his links to the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. Nevertheless, he is a popular pick among many Mets fans. However, during a recent conversation with Just Mets, MLB insider Jon Morosi claimed that, while talking to Beltran before his induction, he was neither for nor against being the next Mets manager.Should Carlos Beltran be the NY Mets next general manager?Inductee Carlos Beltran waves to the crowd from the stage at the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2026 induction ceremony held Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, New York. However, there might be a different role the current Mets front-office advisor and special assistant might be a better fit for: General manager. During a new edition of The Show podcast, co-host and MLB insider Joel Sherman detailed what the team should look for in a potential GM. A role fans have wanted the team to fill under President David Stearns for the last couple of years.“If I were thinking about what that general manager should be, it should be somebody who knows and respects the analytics. I think it needs to be somebody who has a feel for New York, because I think not bringing back Pete Alonso, to some degree, lacked feel. And somebody who’s young, energetic, and cares about the Mets.” Sherman said. The MLB insider was referring to New York Yankees TV announcer and former Mets star David Cone. But he doesn’t have front office experience like Beltran. The nine-time All-Star is nearly 15 years younger than the 63-year-old — Sherman wanted a younger exec. Beltran is a former star that current players saw growing up, while the pitcher was before their time. The former outfielder knows the pressures of being a top star in New York and showed his love for the team by going into the HOF
