The Sporting News originally reported that the Dallas Cowboys are emerging as surprise contenders for the $120 million star amid the standoff with the San Francisco 49ers, with a note to add The Sporting News as a preferred source by clicking here. Brandon Aiyuk may not remain with the 49ers as training camp approaches, and trade buzz has tied him to several interested teams, including the Cowboys. While the idea could be enticing, there are several obstacles that complicate a deal.
A Polymarket poll puts the odds at about 21% that the 49ers’ standout will end up in Dallas, a notion that has fired up fans who envision CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Aiyuk lining up together. Such a trio would be a formidable force on the field, but turning that dream into reality presents serious management challenges.
The primary hurdle is money. Lamb already carries a substantial cap hit, Pickens is seeking a sizable raise, and Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million contract in 2024. fitting three highly paid stars under the NFL salary cap would be nearly impossible for any team, not to mention the Cowboys’ obligations to other top players.
Health is another major risk. Aiyuk has not played football since October 2024 due to a severe knee injury that involved an ACL, MCL, and meniscus tears. After the injury, complications followed. The 49ers voided $27 million of his guaranteed money after he missed team rehab, and GM John Lynch has publicly stated that the player’s time with the team may have ended. Additionally, Aiyuk’s decision to part ways with his agent has added another layer of complexity to contract talks.
Off-field issues heighten the concerns as well. The veteran wideout has been active on social media in ways that have stirred controversy, raising red flags for NFL teams about locker-room dynamics and leadership. Bringing him to Dallas could potentially spark tension and drama within the Cowboys’ locker room.
Though the appeal of pairing three elite receivers is strong in theory, the practical constraints—salary cap limits, questions about Aiyuk’s health, and his off-field behavior—make a Dallas move unlikely. The Cowboys might pivot to more affordable avenues, such as younger players who could develop into solid contributors. One possible alternative is rookie Ryan Flournoy, who could receive a substantial opportunity to showcase his talents with minimal financial risk. If Dallas chooses to pass on a trade, Flournoy could seize the chance to demonstrate his value and contribute without depleting the team’s resources.
In a broader context, the discussion around Aiyuk’s future blends NFL business with dramatic storytelling—fans imagining star power converging on one team while teams weigh the realities of cap space, health, and clubhouse harmony. The potential fit remains an intriguing topic for speculation, but the realities of the salary cap and the off-field dynamics mean the Cowboys are unlikely to consummate a blockbuster move for Aiyuk at this time.
