Craig Berube’s Decision May Have Changed Oilers Coaching Plans

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

Craig Berube has disclosed that he voluntarily withdrew from the Edmonton Oilers’ head coaching search, shedding new light on how the team ultimately landed Mike Babcock. In a candid discussion on Leafs Morning Take, Berube confirmed that he enjoyed a positive and lengthy interview with Oilers management after Kris Knoblauch was dismissed, including conversations with general manager Stan Bowman and Jeff Jackson. He described the meeting as productive, stating, “It was good. I had a great conversation with Stan Bowman and Jeff Jackson for quite some time, and went through the process. It just got dragged out too long, so I just took myself out of it.”
Berube explained that while there were early indications he was a strong candidate, the extended timeline of the hiring process played a crucial role in his decision to walk away. Rather than continue to wait as talks dragged on, he chose to let the Oilers pursue other options, which ultimately led to their decision to hire Mike Babcock. Although the extent of how close the Oilers came to signing Berube remains unclear, his choice effectively left the decision in the Oilers’ hands. He acknowledged that he did not have prior relationships with Bowman or Jackson, but still viewed the experience as a valuable chance to connect and share his perspectives.
“It’s always good to meet people, and they get to know you and get to know what you’re like and what your process is like, your identity, and how you want your team to play,” he added. The veteran coach emphasized that his aspiration to return behind an NHL bench remains strong, and he will continue to monitor future opportunities as they arise.
Berube’s reflections offer an inside look at a pivotal moment for the Oilers, illustrating how timing and patience can influence executive decisions in a high-stakes coaching search. As the league moves forward, teams will likely take note of how Berube’s openness about the process could shape perceptions of candidacy and the importance of alignment between a coach’s vision and an organization’s long-term objectives.
