Craig Halkett admits Celtic title heartbreak still hurts badly

The title race was decided on the last day as Martin O’Neill’s Celtic emerged champions in a dramatic finale at Celtic Park, denying Hearts a fairytale finish. In the wake of the decisive match, frustration spilled over at Tynecastle, with refereeing decisions and the post-match pitch invasion among the major talking points after the defeat. Halkett, sidelined by a serious injury that sidelined him for the final weeks of the season and continues to keep him out, admits the result is hard to swallow. Speaking to Edinburgh News, he reflected: “It was tough because you felt like it should have happened. The players gave a superb display, but after the final whistle there were a surge of emotions.” He continued, “We were angry, not just about the way the game finished but perhaps about how the first couple of weeks leading up to it had unfolded. It felt like a combination of a lot of things not going our way. It was difficult not to feel a bit furious and frustrated. That’s football, though. It was a hard one to take and it’s probably one of those runs you never quite get over.” “In the last week of the season, everything that could go against us did go against us. It’s true that things can go for the other team as well, but that’s football. You have to take it on the chin. The injuries we picked up at the end of the campaign didn’t help.” He added, “Even in the final game, when we started the second half and Beni [Baningime] went down, you think that’s another setback that’s swung the outcome. It reshaped the match. It was a tough pill to swallow.”
