It’s Wednesday night here at BCB After Dark, the hippest hotspot for night owls, early risers, new parents, and Cubs fans overseas. We’re thrilled you decided to drop by. Step inside and cool off for a while—no cover charge. Come as you are. We still have a few tables open, so bring your own beverage if you’d like. BCB After Dark is the perfect place to chat about baseball, music, movies, or whatever else you need to vent, as long as it stays within the site’s rules. The late-nighters are invited to kick things off, but everyone else is welcome to join in as you wake up the next morning and roll into the afternoon.
Last night I asked you to pick between four potential draft picks, an anonymous poll I presented as a philosophical exercise rather than a real vote. You quickly pegged the options as Mason Edwards, Hunter Dietz, Zion Rose, and Daniel Jackson. The intent was to explore risk tolerance in pitching, and the results suggested a split: about 45 percent chose the first option (Edwards), reflecting a preference for risk-averse pitching, while roughly 33 percent were willing to roll the dice on the oft-injured but highly talented Dietz.
Now we move into the music and movies portion. If you’d like to skip it, you’re free to do so. Tonight we feature saxophonist Chris Potter joining pianist Emmett Cohen in a tribute to the late, great “Saxophone Colossus,” Sonny Rollins. They’re joined by John Patitucci on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums, performing a Rollins-composed piece, “Airegin.”
Between the World Cup and the Draft prep, I haven’t had time to watch any movies this week, and I still haven’t had the chance to revisit Eno on the Criterion Channel since they rebooted it at the start of the month. So, to spark a discussion, I’m asking you for your five “desert island” movies. If you were stranded on a desert island and allowed to bring five films, which five would you choose? I realize you’d have to figure out how you’d power the screen and what you’d watch them on in such a setting; in this fantasy, you could even conjure a private theater powered by a seawater–driven generator if you want to.
If you asked me tomorrow, I might give a different answer, but today these are the five I’d want on exile with me: Double Indemnity; The Umbrellas of Cherbourg; Dr. Strangelove; Heathers; and Mad Max: Fury Road. Maybe I should have chosen films I’ve seen fewer times, but the point of this exercise is to select the movies that would mean the most to you—the ones that would make time on a desert island feel meaningful, not necessarily the “best” films, but the ones that speak to you personally and keep you company.
So, what are your five desert island films? Welcome back to everyone who tunes in and skips the music and movies. Cubs fans, vice-president of S for better SEO, and all the rest, share your picks. And if you’re joining us tonight, settle in and enjoy the mix of conversation, music, and cinema as we keep the night going.
