Dabo Swinney speaks up about Clemson’s QB competition at ACC Kickoff

Quarterback was one of the biggest questions facing Clemson football after Cade Klubnik’s departure, but Dabo Swinney said the Tigers never believed the answer was outside the program.During his appearance at the ACC Football Kickoff, Swinney explained why Clemson chose not to enter the transfer portal in search of a veteran quarterback. While many programs have rebuilt the position through transfers in recent years, Clemson remained committed to the players it had already developed.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“We made a decision that we weren’t going to go and get some shiny object at quarterback,” Swinney said. “We always do what we think at Clemson is best for our team.”That confidence starts with Christopher Vizzina. After spending time learning behind Klubnik, Vizzina enters preseason camp in position to become Clemson’s next starting quarterback. Swinney said the former four-star recruit has earned that opportunity by staying patient and continuing to improve every season.“This kid has stayed loyal to Clemson, and he has done everything he’s been asked to do,” Swinney said. “When he’s had an opportunity to play, he’s played well.”Even with Vizzina leading the race, Clemson isn’t declaring the competition over before camp begins. Freshman Tait Reynolds made enough progress during spring practice to put himself firmly in the conversation, giving the coaching staff another quarterback they believe has a bright future.“It’s CV’s job to lose, and it’s Tait’s opportunity to go win it,” Swinney said.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementClemson’s coaches will use preseason camp to sort out the depth chart, but Swinney’s comments leave little doubt about where things stand entering August. Vizzina has the inside track, and now it’s up to him to prove he’s ready to lead the Tigers into a new era at quarterback.Contact us @Clemson_Wire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news and notes, plus opinions. This article originally appeared on Clemson Wire: Dabo Swinney speaks up about Clemson’s QB competition at ACC Kickoff
