Daily Bean: Connor Bedard Summer Injury; Hellebuyck Trade Talk; Bruins Depth Chart

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Once again, the NHL offseason is showing a noticeable lull in action after July 1, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t news to discuss. The biggest moves are in the rearview, and the headlines have shifted toward summer injuries, ongoing trade chatter, and coaching changes. In Bruins news, there’s a refreshed depth chart following the first week of free agency, and the P-Bruins’ home opener has been announced. Across the league, Connor Bedard underwent surgery and will miss the early portion of the regular season. The Mammoth matched an offer sheet, with more decisions expected soon, and the Avalanche have reportedly checked in on the gold medal-winning goalie.
In the Atlantic Division, the Red Wings still haven’t secured a Dylan Larkin trade package, while the Canadiens are bringing in the former Red Wings coach to join Martin St. Louis’s staff as an assistant. Happy Thursday—here’s your catch-up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
Depth Chart: One week (and now a day) after free agency, the Bruins boast a robust cadre of NHL-caliber players. The roster currently includes 17 forwards and 10 defensemen, with the possibility of further moves still on the horizon.
Providence: The P-Bruins announced their home opener yesterday, and their schedule will be released today. They’ll open the season against the Utica Comets (NJD) on October 2.
Mailbag: Last call for questions! Thanks to everyone who submitted inquiries. The first portion of the mailbag will be released today, with enough questions to warrant a second installment tomorrow. If your question isn’t addressed in either part and hasn’t already been answered elsewhere, I’ll respond in the comments.
Chicago Hockey Now: Connor Bedard suffered an injury during a summer skate in Vancouver and will miss the start of the 2026-27 season. The 20-year-old is expected to be sidelined for about four months. Jack Bushman has more, including footage of the moment he lost his balance and hit the boards.
Colorado Hockey Now: Did the Colorado Avalanche take a swing at the Secretary of Defense? Elliotte Friedman reports—and does not confirm—that the Avalanche may have pursued Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Aarif Deen breaks down how that scenario could unfold.
New Jersey Hockey Now: The Utah Mammoth are keeping Barrett Hayton, having matched the Devils’ one-year, $4.775 million offer sheet to keep him in Salt Lake City for this season. With New Jersey lacking a middle-six forward, they still possess cap flexibility as Sunny Mehta navigates his first year at the helm.
Philly Hockey Now: On the topic of offer sheets, Monday’s anticipated Leo Carlsson move might be revealed tomorrow. The Flyers submitted a five-year, $90 million offer sheet for the 21-year-old center, a signal of Danny Briere’s determination to accelerate the team’s rebuild.
Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings and Dylan Larkin have not made progress following the captain’s trade request. The situation remains unresolved as teams weigh options.
