Dan Quinn updates Jayden Daniels’ status for the upcoming week

Sunday was a tough day for the Washington Commanders. It feels like we’ve been saying that a lot recently. On Sunday, the Commanders fell to 1-3 after a 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. While the loss stings, Washington may have lost much more than the game. Early on, it looked like the Commanders would blow the Colts away. Then quarterback Marcus Mariota went down, and everything changed. Mariota suffered a knee injury in the first quarter and did not return. Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis stepped in and had his moments, good and bad, but it wasn’t enough to keep Washington in the game. Several other Commanders dealt with injuries, too. Wide receiver Jaylin Lane suffered a gruesome leg injury in the second half and was carted off. Defensive lineman Charles Omenihu had a groin injury and did not return. There were others, but most returned to the game. Good news appears on the horizon. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels practiced last week. After it was revealed that Daniels would avoid surgery, he was expected to return sooner rather than later. Daniels traveled with the team to London to stay close with them and get some practice time. The Commanders were likely never seriously considering returning him to the lineup in London. The New York Giants in Week 5 seemed like the target date. After Mariota’s injury and Daniels’ practicing last week, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the news. Daniels will be practicing all week, and the plan is to return him to the starting lineup next week. “That’s the hope for us for sure, Jay coming back,” Quinn said after Sunday’s game. “He’ll have a full week of practice Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. That’s the goal: that he could get into that space. Once we get, see where Marcus is, that part too, we’ll have a better understanding.”Quinn then revealed the plan was for Daniels to handle all the practice reps“That’s the goal for Jayden to throw a full-on week. He was able to do some limited this week, and this week would be the plan for him to do all the reps.”There you have it. Daniels is returning. With Mariota expected to be out at least for a couple of weeks, will the Commanders stick with Kaliakmanis as the backup, or add another veteran?Quinn will speak to the media on Monday, when he’ll provide some updates on Washington’s injured players.
