Dana White shares bizarre comment on Conor McGregor injury conspiracy after UFC 329

The highly anticipated return of Conor McGregor for UFC 329 on Saturday night drew immense hype, but his bout with Max Holloway ended up delivering one of the most disappointing finishes in UFC history. McGregor suffered a knee injury in the opening minute, leading to a stoppage just one minute and five seconds into the fight and granting Holloway the victory.
After the fight, questions swirled about whether McGregor had sustained an injury before stepping into the Octagon to face Holloway. UFC president and CEO Dana White addressed the pre-fight injury speculation, suggesting that while a pre-existing injury could not be completely ruled out, several indicators pointed to McGregor being healthy on fight night. White highlighted the pre-fight face-off between McGregor and Holloway, noting that it drew around 80 million views on his accounts alone, and argued that if McGregor had been injured beforehand, there would have been visible signs during that moment.
“Just the face-off,” White said, “is at 80 million views on my accounts. If there was a pre-existing injury, somebody would have noticed it.” He added that McGregor charged at Holloway without showing obvious signs of being hindered, and while “anything is possible,” the overall impression was that McGregor appeared healthy, given the magnitude of the viewership and the absence of obvious pre-fight indicators.
That said, White did not offer a definitive ruling, acknowledging that evidence is not conclusive. There are still questions, but the face-off alone wasn’t enough to settle them.
A piece of evidence that muted the pre-fight injury theory came from a locker room clip shown before McGregor walked out. In the footage, McGregor is seen warming up and displaying no visible signs of an injury. He looked spry, landed kicks, and appeared unimpeded during the warm-up. Although he stumbled slightly while removing his sneakers before entering the Octagon, he immediately put full weight on his right knee, bouncing a few times as if testing it.
During the opening moments of the bout, McGregor went down twice while pursuing follow-up strikes and kicked attempts, and it appeared he might have landed awkwardly on his knee. While it’s impossible to say with certainty when the injury occurred, that initial stumble and subsequent issues could point to an injury happening during those early exchanges.
Afterward, McGregor took to X (formerly Twitter) to state that he had “no injury/injuries going into the fight.” He added, “I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage,” suggesting he believed he was fully prepared and uninjured heading into the bout.
The context surrounding McGregor’s injury remains complex. While White offered cautious commentary that the face-off evidence did not unequivocally prove a pre-existing injury, the locker room footage and the early in-fight sequence left room for interpretation. The fight’s abrupt conclusion, caused by the knee issue just over a minute into the match, will likely fuel ongoing discussions among fans and analysts about the true extent and timing of McGregor’s injury.
