Adams was nearly part of the Rams’ strategic moves this offseason, but plans to upgrade his replacement fell through. Now entering his second season with Los Angeles, he finds himself alongside several new and noteworthy teammates. The Rams added Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie in trades this offseason, and they also signed McDuffie’s former teammate and fellow cornerback Jaylen Watson in free agency. Adams recognizes the potential impact of these additions, but he also remains steadfast in the belief that nothing is guaranteed.
Davante Adams, looking on as a key figure for the Rams, continually challenges his teammates on the field. At the American Century Classic golf outing, Adams addressed the team’s outlook and the preseason favorites label. For him, that designation means little in the grand scheme of things. He offered candid guidance to Puka Nacua and the rest of the wide receivers: “Last thing I tell Puka, the rest of the receivers, we’re the best in the world, but it don’t matter. You’ve got to play like it. No matter how good you are, it’s about how good you play.” He emphasized that this is the motto for the year—not just for the team, but in his own approach as well. “That’s the way I look at it. And, yeah, we go out there and hopefully do what we got to do,” Adams said to reporters at the event on July 10.
Adams has not previously discussed his pre-game remarks publicly, but he remains focused on one major objective: winning a Super Bowl. Now 34 in December, Adams enters the 2025 season with a 0-5 record in Conference Championship Games, a tally that includes the Rams’ recent campaign. The Athletic’s Nate Atkins noted on July 1 that this could be Adams’ last realistic chance to be a primary option on a championship-contending team. He is entering the final year of his two-year, $44 million contract with the Rams.
Adams has shown genuine enthusiasm about the Rams’ significant offseason acquisitions. Despite delivering a clear message, he eagerly discussed the new cast around him, interrupting questions to highlight the impact of McDuffie, and then turning his focus to Watson and Garrett. McDuffie earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and, like Watson, is a two-time Super Bowl champion. Together, they are expected to bolster a previously porous pass defense, while Garrett’s presence—having set the NFL single-season sack record last year—reduces the time quarterbacks have to react. Adams labeled McDuffie as the “best corner in the league,” explaining that his impression of McDuffie grew once they spent time together in the offseason. “I’ll say that I didn’t know that until I saw him this year and got to be with him his offseason. He’s a very, very, [excellent player],” Adams concluded, underscoring the high expectations for the Rams’ revamped defense.
