I’m genuinely surprised that so many people in Los Angeles didn’t seem to truly embrace LeBron during his time here, and I’ve found the reaction to his decision not to return to the city to be quite perplexing. It’s as if a large segment of the fanbase celebrated his departure the way one would celebrate a monumental victory, almost like a parade signaling the end of an era. I’m not claiming this spells doom for the Lakers. The franchise has endured for 80 years, and I’m confident it will continue to endure long after this decision. But I can’t help being surprised by some of the reactions I’ve seen, and I do think, in many ways, people have already moved on—and a lot of fans surely have.
