Do you remember when Tom Brady claimed he “didn’t have a dog in the fight” before the New England Patriots headed to Super Bowl LX? Some now wonder if he was merely trying to mislead the media. In the last twelve hours, NFL rumor chatter has increasingly pointed the finger at Brady as the source of knowledge on how to attack a team to which he dedicated two decades of his career. Brady is currently a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and works as an NFL on Fox color commentator. It seems his contracts either require him to stay neutral or to show some alignment with the team he is connected to. Yet the sight of him not giving any credit to the Patriots—six-time Super Bowl champions and the franchise that even feted him with a statue outside its stadium—has irritated many Patriots fans.
On Friday, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald appeared on the Dan Patrick Show to discuss some of the advice he had received from fellow coaches and league figures. The discussion sparked backlash when he declined to name a specific person because of a “conflict of interest.” “John Harbaugh and I talked,” Macdonald said. “He was great. Probably can’t mention one guy that really helped us out that had some conflict of interest.” Patrick immediately pressed whether the person might be Bill Belichick, but Macdonald shut that down, noting there doesn’t appear to be much of a relationship there. That left open the possibility that the other prime suspect could be Brady—the so-called GOAT.
Brady offering guidance to Macdonald seems plausible given the timing. Brady was in the process of pursuing Seattle’s offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, as the Raiders’ next head coach. Just two weeks earlier, Brady had been calling the NFC Championship game in Seattle, a meeting that would have brought the two teams physically close. The question remains: what does the “conflict of interest” actually signify? Macdonald may have meant that Brady has ties to the Patriots, yet Brady’s competitive persona and carefully managed public image have kept him at an arm’s length from that organization in recent years. The seven-time champion’s conduct has given many the impression that he still harbors some resentment about those final contract negotiations back in 2020.
The Patriots organization looked frayed as Brady retired, and the team often leaned on nostalgia to reel him back in, seemingly prolonging the era with a revolving door of feel-good moments. Then Drake Maye arrived on the scene. With that in mind, one could speculate that Brady might offer a few tips to a Josh McDaniels–led offense to help preserve his legacy a little longer before the “new kid in town” took the reins. Or perhaps the “conflict of interest” label ties to Brady’s connections to Fox Sports and the Las Vegas Raiders, a combination that could invite more serious scrutiny if explored thoroughly.
