​The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to receive a duo of reinforcements for both sides of the diamond with less than a week until the MLB Trade Deadline as Kiké Hernández and Edwin Díaz are set to make their return to the club. To make room for Hernández, manager Dave Roberts confirmed on Tuesday to the media via Jack Harris of The California Post and was later announced from the Dodgers that Alex Freeland will be optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Freeland, 24, had not seen significant playing time for the Dodgers, especially with the return of Tommy Edman. In 72 games overall, Freeland slashed .231/.309/.622 across 195 at-bats with three home runs and 19 RBIs. Hernández, who suffered a torn oblique in just his second game back in late May from being activated off the Injured List following offseason elbow surgery, had made leaps and bounds coming off his injury. Though his progress was ever-so rampant, Roberts and the Dodgers decided not to rush their super utility man and let him finish off the rest of his 60-day IL stint. The 34-year-old Hernández slashed .333/.320/.542 with one home run in 24 at-bats for OKC. As the Dodgers kick off a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners at Dodger Stadium beginning on Tuesday, the first time that the Dodgers are back home in 16 days, Roberts wants to ease Hernández in as much as possible. The circumstance of the Mariners also throwing out three straight righties gives Roberts ever more reason to hold off on Hernández being in the starting lineup throughout the duration of this series. “We’ve got three right-handers this series, so I’m not sure if he’s going to get a start,” Roberts told the media via the Bleed Los Podcast. “Use him off the bench, but then after that, it’s projected we’ve got five left-handed starters in a row, so there should be a lot of opportunities right there for him.”Roberts added that Hernández will mostly play third base, left field and occasionally center field to give Andy Pages some days of rest if need be. Díaz set to return Alongside Hernández, Díaz is set to come off the IL after removing loose bodies in his elbow three months ago. Since the beginning of the month, the 32-year-old reliever logged in 5.2 innings across Single-A and Triple-A. In seven appearances, he recorded an ERA of 3.18 and held hitters to a .200 batting average while striking out 11. “He’s checked all of his boxes, Roberts said. “Getting him back in the mix is going to be fun for all of us.” Díaz will be joining a Dodgers bullpen that has been spearheaded by southpaw Tanner Scott, who has jotted down an ERA of 2.32 across 42.2 innings. Roberts did not go into specifics on what role Díaz will play upon his return, but the ‘ease into it’ factor could work as the right-hander falls into the rythm of a major league reliever. Join the CommunityDon’t miss out on our ROUNDTABLE community and the latest news!It’s completely free to join.
