​The Dolphins’ boldest offseason bet already carries the sense that it could backfire. They are banking on Malik Willis, and that bet may age poorly. That verdict doesn’t deny Willis’s potential. He has obvious athleticism, a strong arm, and the kind of mobility that can reshape how defenses prepare. In the right framework, there is a path to productivity. But Miami is asking him to do more than simply be an impressive talent. They are asking him to become the solution at quarterback amid a full offensive reset.
That distinction matters. Moving away from the Tua Tagovailoa era, with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle still on board, was not a minor roster tweak. It altered the entire identity of the offense. Miami shifted from a system rooted in timing, speed, and proven star power to one that now relies heavily on projection. Perhaps the new coaching staff can design enough around Willis’s strengths to make it work. Maybe the run game can carry more weight. Maybe the receiving group can develop quickly enough. But those are a lot of maybes for a team trying to stay relevant in the AFC.
The concern isn’t that Willis will be a total flop. The worry is that his inconsistency could leave Miami stranded in the middle. A handful of missed throws, stalled drives, or games where the passing attack can’t generate late-answer drives could tilt the narrative about this decision in a hurry.
This is where the gamble becomes perilous. The AFC East offers little wiggle room for experimentation. Buffalo remains built around Josh Allen. New England is attempting to assemble around Drake Maye. The Jets aren’t about to ease Miami’s path, either. Miami cannot afford to spend half a season discovering whether this version of the offense is sustainable.
Willis might inject a more dynamic element to the run game and provide a fresh start. But fresh starts only matter if they lead somewhere tangible. Right now, Miami’s plan feels interesting, yet far from safe. The gamble could pay off if Willis develops into a legitimate quarterback, but as it stands, it carries a real risk of leaving the franchise with a middling outcome rather than a breakthrough.
