It has been a busy offseason in the NHL world. Eastern conference rivals like the Buffalo Sabres and the Florida Panthers have already begun making deals that they believe will move the needle in 2027.
The Boston Bruins, on the other hand, have remained relatively stagnant. They made one deal to acquire some draft capital, but their pursuit of more top-line talent has turned up nothing.
General manager Don Sweeney told reporters that he is eager to begin moving players.
“I don’t think the transactions are going to stop between now and the timeframe in July,” Sweeney said. “We’re eager to be participating, haven’t yet, I guess what we did with [Andre] Gasseau, but there’s been a lot of chatter, so I expect things to continue in terms of player movement and stuff heading into the draft to be busy.”
Sweeney told reporters that he believes Boston’s biggest strength in negotiations is the fact that it is an “attractive place to play.” He seems to be relying heavily on the aura of playing for the Boston Bruins to attract the top-end talent that the roster has been missing throughout the lineup in the past two seasons.
“We look at it, we’re an attractive place to play,” Sweeney said. “Ultimately, I just use that as an example because whether or not that’s where a spouse wants to live or where … they’re all variables.
“You just have to address them and move forward. But we’ve got a terrific fan base. The guys love playing here. The conversations that I have about people wanting to play here have fortunately not changed. And we’re thankful for that. And we’re a destination place.”
The hard truth is this: Boston does not have an extremely desirable selection in the first round of this week’s NHL Draft. If they want to make big moves, it will come at the cost of big prospects.
