Dragusin enthusiastic about Fiorentina, but Tottenham ‘helped me grow’

Radu Dragusin has admitted that he “couldn’t wait to get here” and join Fiorentina, while acknowledging that his time at Tottenham Hotspur “helped me grow a great deal.” The defender completed his move to the Viola this afternoon on a loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season, contingent on certain conditions being met.
“I feel really good, I am so happy to be here and can’t wait to get started with the lads on the pitch,” Dragusin told Fiorentina’s official website. The Romania international already speaks fluent Italian, having spent much of his career in Italy. He first arrived in the country with Juventus’ youth academy in 2018, followed by loan spells at Sampdoria and Salernitana. He then flourished at Genoa in 2022, a stretch that helped him attract attention from bigger clubs. This progression ultimately led to a €28 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024. Now, he has returned to Italy on loan for €1.5 million, with an obligation to buy for a further €17.5 million to be activated on his 22nd appearance for Fiorentina.
In describing his fondness for Florence, Dragusin said, “I had already come to Florence a few times when playing for Genoa, just as a tourist to visit this beautiful city and its amiable people. There is a big season ahead of us and we certainly want to do well.” He went on to reflect on the value of his Tottenham chapter: “The experience at Tottenham helped me grow a great deal, both as a player and a man. I carry with me the many tough duels I had with opposition strikers, the quality of the players I faced. It helped me to mature and I hope to bring that experience with me in this new team.”
Dragusin noted that there are familiar faces within the current Fiorentina squad, which has helped him settle quickly. “I already played with Albert Gudmundsson at Genoa and we have a great rapport. I also know Fagioli, Kean, and Ranieri, so we exchanged some messages over the last few days. I couldn’t wait to get here.” The defender’s ties to teammates extend beyond past clubs, underscoring his readiness to integrate smoothly into Fiorentina’s setup.
His spell at Tottenham, though interrupted by injury, was marked by a serious setback: a torn anterior cruciate ligament in January 2025 sidelined him for a substantial period. That injury threatened to derail his progress, but Dragusin has used the recovery period to reflect on his development and sharpen his focus on returning to peak form. The ACL rupture was a major challenge, effectively keeping him out for nearly a year, yet it did not diminish his ambition or his determination to contribute meaningfully to Fiorentina’s ambitions this season.
As Dragusin begins this new chapter with Fiorentina, the club’s supporters will be keen to see him translate the lessons learned in England into the benefits for their team. Fiorentina will be hoping that Dragusin’s experience, composure under pressure, and versatility across the backline can bolster their defense and provide a steadying influence as they push for a strong campaign in Serie A and European competitions. The loan move, with an obligation to buy, signals Fiorentina’s belief in Dragusin’s potential to develop further within their system and contribute consistently.
For now, Dragusin remains excited about the immediate task ahead: integrating with his new teammates, adapting to Fiorentina’s tactical approach, and delivering performances that reflect the growth he has experienced during his time in Italy and in England. The road to establishing himself as a key defender for Fiorentina begins now, and Dragusin appears ready to embrace the challenge with the confidence that comes from his diverse experiences at Genoa, Juventus’ esteemed academy, and Tottenham Hotspur.
