Nonetheless, Hurts has caught flak after the game.Drew Brees criticises Jalen Hurts’ protective move which sacrificed additional yardsWith the score tied 7-7 in the second quarter and on a 3rd-and-9 from the Eagles’ 47, Hurts rushed for seven yards and slid to set up a fourth-and-two instead of pushing forward for the first down through contact, upsetting Brees on the broadcast.“I was hyping up Jalen Hurts; now I’m gonna get on him. Lower your shoulder and go get the first down. You slide; they’re gonna mark the ball where you started the slide, not where you end it. It’s not a tush push situation, and it’s not a fourth-and-one; it’s a fourth-and-three.”Brees was never an elite rusher of the ball either, so his criticism was surprising to many.In a game where the Eagles already lost Saquon Barkley and Dallas Goedert, it would be foolish for Hurts to put himself through that much contact and open himself up to injury risk.If this were a crucial game to decide the division or a playoff game, every yard matters. However, causing the Eagles to lose three key starters in one half for an additional yard or two would be terrible game management.Photo by Terence Lewis/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesHurts protected himself and went on to go 26-of-37 for 264 yards, resulting in two touchdowns. He had an 85.9 passer rating despite the stats, primarily because he also threw two interceptions. As a rusher, Hurts had five carries for 16 yards. The Eagles are in a good position right now in the standings and were in an evenly poised game.It made little sense for Hurts to endanger himself, reflecting the disconnect between past legends and current stars in how they can intelligently ascertain the situations where the injury risk is worth it.Read more:‘Still doing it’ – Patrick Mahomes breaks down key factors behind Travis Kelce’s resurgence‘Popped my rib into place…’ – Joe Burrow’s grateful words to Texans DE after Bengals win‘Can’t say enough’ – Travis Kelce’s emotional praise for Patrick Mahomes after electric display
