​As the college basketball offseason rolls on, it won’t be long until the season is finally here. For the North Carolina Tar Heels, it will be the first year of the Michael Malone era as he replaces Hubert Davis.Malone has been hard at work on the recruiting trail, looking to build up the future of the program. He now has the task of getting the program back on track. While Malone has landed some good players so far, there are a few he’s missed out on.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNow, one specific recruit is adding some more spice to the UNC-Duke rivalry.International big man Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje committed to Duke earlier this year, opting to join the Blue Devils after interest from other programs, including North Carolina. It felt like Duke was the only real option for the big man who played at Barcelona. He’s a very intriguing prospect who will spend two seasons at Duke and is already impressing, playing for Team USA earlier this month.But recently, Boumtje-Boumtje made his feelings known about North Carolina.On a podcast put out by Duke, Boumtje-Boumtje was asked by Dame Sarr why he came here. The center took the opportunity to take a shot at North Carolina in the answer.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”Really just my gut feeling. I liked a lot of the schools I had offers from. But at the end of the day, the thing that sold it was if I go to one of these schools, I feel like I’m missing out on Duke,” Boumtje-Boumtje said. “For Duke, I didn’t feel that way for other schools. I didn’t feel like I was missing out on going to, UNC for example. It would have been great, but I feel like I would have been missing out on Duke if I went to UNC.”We get what he’s trying to say. But he does mention UNC specifically in the answer which makes it sound like he’s taking a little bit of a shot at the program.UNC will face Duke twice this year so they will get familiar with Boumtje-Boumtje.
