Dylan Larkin leaves trade request unresolved amid Wild speculation

In his first comments since requesting a trade from Detroit, Dylan Larkin said he doesn’t regret asking for a trade but is focused on getting back on the ice with his teammates.“No,” Larkin said when asked if he regretted how the situation played out over the summer. “I mean, I asked for a trade. I haven’t thought about it. I’m here.”After 11 seasons in Detroit, Larkin requested a trade from the Red Wings in early June. Throughout the summer, the Wild have been one of the teams most linked to Larkin in a trade. However, three months after the original request, Larkin remains with the Red Wings as the 2026-27 season approaches. Detroit’s asking price for Larkin has been speculated to be high, which likely scared off teams. Another reason the saga has played out all summer is that Detroit’s GM job was left vacant until early this week after Steve Yzerman stepped down from the role in early July.Shawn Horcoff was named interim GM of the Red Wings earlier this week. In his first press conference on Wednesday, Horcoff dropped the latest twist in the saga, revealing Larkin suffered an upper-body injury and won’t be on the ice when the team opens camp.“I got hurt in the gym working out,” Larkin said when asked how he suffered the injury. “I’m pushing to get healthy and I want to be out there. This is very unfortunate timing. I wish I could show with my actions to build trust with my teammates again and with the fans.”When asked why he requested a trade from Detroit, Larkin remained vague.“There’s a lot there, you know, a lot of personal stuff,” said Larkin. “To be honest with you, I’m not ready to go there yet. I understand that there’s answers that fans and people that care about this organization around the world want to know. But I’m really not ready to go there. It’s something that I may never be (ready for). It wasn’t easy to get to that decision. It was very hard. It wasn’t a spur of the moment thing. I don’t take what I did lightly. I got to that point and I’m not quite ready to talk about it.”Larkin said he “didn’t know” that he wanted a trade when the Red Wings’ season ended in April, but that at some point he “got to that point.” He did clarify that winning the gold medal with Team USA at the Winter Olympics had nothing to do with his request. Asked whether the request still stood, Larkin said he was going to keep that between himself and the team.Wild GM Bill Guerin has chased a potential Larkin trade all summer while also dealing with ongoing negotiations with star defenseman Quinn Hughes. It was widely thought earlier this year that Minnesota would need a third team involved to swing a trade for the two-time All-Star because the Wild reportedly don’t have the pieces the Red Wings covet.“I guess, I didn’t foresee what had happened,” Larkin said when asked how he handled the summer with the request hanging over everything. “Some of it was out of my control.
