Dylan Larkin’s wish list remains unchanged after free agency flurry

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

It’s turning into a standoff between the Detroit Red Wings and their disgruntled captain, Dylan Larkin. In the more than two months since Larkin’s representative, Pat Brisson, asked for a trade, Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has yet to receive an offer from any of the three teams on Larkin’s list—the Florida Panthers, the Minnesota Wild, and the Vegas Golden Knights—that he believes warrants serious consideration. The team has kept the door open to other potential suitors, as is their prerogative, but no concrete deal has emerged.
Brisson told USA TODAY/Detroit Free Press on Wednesday, July 8, that there hasn’t been any new development to report. The stalemate remains intact.
Larkin, who will turn 30 on July 30, is signed for five more years at a salary cap hit of $8.7 million per season. Beyond the cap figure, the Wings have already disbursed $31 million in actual salary to Larkin, which makes his contract comparatively favorable for him as a player under terms that are favorable to the club. Detroit isn’t interested in acquiring future assets as compensation in this potential trade; a person with knowledge of the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that Yzerman is prepared for Larkin to report to training camp rather than move him merely for the sake of moving him.
The Red Wings’ stance reflects a broader preference for keeping a player of Larkin’s value rather than swapping him for uncertain future pieces. The willingness to listen to other organizations remains, but there hasn’t been a trade proposal that meets the team’s criteria or would significantly alter the club’s approach for the coming season.
If Larkin does arrive for camp, he will be entering a season that could redefine his role and the team’s expectations. The leadership he offers remains a central element for Detroit, especially as the organization navigates a franchise-wide transition that has included younger players stepping into larger roles and an evolving roster built to compete in a strengthened division. The dynamic between player expectations and front-office strategy has underscored the realities of modern professional hockey, where trade requests, contract structures, and team philosophy must all align to produce a viable path forward.
