​FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown reminded the Eagles during Wednesday’s Eagles-Patriots joint practice that they will miss him this season. The New England crowd roared every time the former Eagles wide receiver caught a pass during the two-hour session at the Patriots’ practice facility. Brown led the Patriots in catches, keeping the crowd noisy throughout the day. We didn’t count the exact number, but there were many. During team drills, Brown gave Eagles cornerback Tariq Woolen a long day. Brown beat Woolen on two deep balls down the sideline. On both reps, Brown got a step on Woolen, creating separation that allowed Patriots quarterback Drake Maye to drop in perfect passes.Quinyon Mitchell locked up Brown during a one-on-one rep, but that seemed to be the only time an Eagles cornerback slowed down Brown. Brown later beat Mitchell on an in-breaker route.Watching Brown have success must have been painful. The former Eagles star wanted out of Philadelphia due to his frustrations with the Eagles’ passing game, and the Eagles ultimately decided a fresh start was best for both parties. So, on June 1, the Eagles traded Brown to the Patriots for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. The decision may ultimately prove best for both parties, but the Patriots looked like the winners of that trade on Wednesday. Brown had a down year last season, but he was playing at an All-Pro level during this practice. New England’s offense made big plays against the Eagles’ defense, which is considered one of the NFL’s best units, and it wouldn’t have been able to do that without Brown. Backup wide receiver Elijah Moore beat Patriots safety Kevin Byard deep downfield for a big catch, but that was one of a few explosive moments. The Patriots were sticky in coverage and did a good job of limiting Dontayvion Wicks, Hollywood Brown and Moore.The Eagles are trying to replace A.J. Brown’s production with a combination of wide receivers. Today, that plan failed.
