​The Eagles’ tight end unit was a problem before Saturday night, but it’s now more clear than ever that they must add another tight end.Rookie tight end Eli Stowers getting placed on injured reserve did not make things worse. The situation was already bad. Even before the Stowers injury, the Eagles needed to sign or trade for a better backup tight end. Stowers was not ready to play in Week 1, and after he returns, he likely won’t make a big impact. Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins both provide no threat in the passing game and will limit the Eagles’ upside in 12 and 13 personnel packages. Mundt has recorded 74 catches for 658 yards and 4 touchdowns during his nine-year career. Jenkins has made one catch for seven yards in 10 NFL games.With Stowers out, the Eagles will have to add a fourth tight end to their 53-man roster to use multiple tight end sets. The Eagles could add a franchise legend to help solve this problem. PHLY’s EJ Smith reported last week that a Zach Ertz return to the Eagles is on the table.Ertz, who is currently a free agent, played nine seasons with the Eagles from 2013-2021 and ranks second all-time in franchise history with 579 catches. His prime ended a while ago, but he was still a good player last year for the Washington Commanders. He finished with 50 catches for 504 yards and 4 touchdowns before tearing his ACL in December.Of course, the Eagles have to be comfortable with Ertz’s recovery to sign him, but he would be a good option if he’s healthy. He would offer them more upside in the receiving department, which would allow Mundt and Jenkins to hone in on their blocking. If not Ertz, the Eagles could trade for a tight end at some point during the fall.
