The session I attended was a lighter day, but Hurts executed a designed run multiple times, and he looks as if he’s moving well. A team source agreed, noting Hurts looks “quicker and faster.” Hurts averaged nearly 700 rushing yards per season from 2021 to 2024, but that production dipped to 421 yards last year. The tush push isn’t going away, with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion recently telling reporters the play is “extremely effective.” But based on early observations, I’m expecting Hurts to get to open space a little more often than last season, when he averaged around 6.5 attempts. Hurts says he feels as if he’s also making strides in Mannion’s passing game. He has doubled down on the details of the under-center offense, particularly the footwork. He says it’s all about sequencing and marrying the feet with the eyes. Mannion noticed that Hurts honed in on this particular area very early in the offseason, allowing the pair to then dig in on the big picture of attacking defenses. “In the end, you’re still playing the position, and you want to play the position the same way — play with your feet, sweep through your reads, know exactly where you’re supposed to go with the ball,” Hurts said. “[Know] where your alerts are, whether it’s down the field or whether it’s a man alert, just try and play fast. But that is more so just understanding what you’re doing, what we’re trying to attack, being on the same page and playing each play.” One observation from people here: The offensive operation is a little cleaner than it was last season. His success carried over to 11-on-11, where he got open on an out route to beat Riq Woolen. He made an over-the-shoulder grab down the right sideline with both Michael Carter II and Zack Baun trailing.
