Michael Edwards is set to depart from his role as Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of Football, bringing to a close a 15-year chapter with Liverpool that spans two separate spells with the club. Edwards first joined Liverpool in 2011 and rose through the ranks to become sporting director, a position he held from 2016 to 2022. His influence helped shape the club’s recruiting strategy during a transformative era, contributing to the arrivals of influential players such as Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Fabinho, Mohamed Salah, and Andy Robertson. He also earned acclaim from supporters for his strategic handling of high-profile sales, including Rhian Brewster, Jordon Ibe, and Philippe Coutinho.
Edwards returned to Anfield for a second stint in March 2024, taking on leadership during a period of notable change in the club’s hierarchy and management. One of his central aims on his return was to assist Fenway Sports Group in implementing a multi-club model across its football portfolio; however, opportunities to acquire additional clubs did not materialize into a purchase. In announcing Edwards’s exit, Fenway Sports Group described the departure as “the culmination of a planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities,” signaling a deliberate and orderly handover as the organization refines its long-term football strategy.
Reflecting on his second tenure, Edwards expressed pride in his return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool at a crucial juncture. He conveyed his belief that Liverpool remains in a robust position, supported by a dedicated workforce, a clear strategic direction, and a solid foundation for ongoing success. “It has been a privilege to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment,” Edwards stated. He added that while the club would benefit from a period of transition, he left convinced that Liverpool is well-placed for future achievements, thanks to the people involved and the precise groundwork laid during his time back at the club.
Edwards also highlighted the broader scope of his brief, noting that his return came with enthusiasm for guiding Liverpool through a pivotal transition and contributing to Fenway Sports Group’s wider football ambitions. While the broader initiative evolved in a direction different from initial expectations, he expressed pride in the team’s efforts to present ownership with a comprehensive suite of well-considered options for the club’s future. This sentiment underscores Edwards’s commitment to strategic leadership, the club’s enduring competitiveness, and the continued pursuit of excellence within Liverpool’s football operations and the wider FSG portfolio.
