EFL players’ World Cup involvement ends

The final quartet of English Football League players have seen their World Cup hopes extinguished at the quarter-final stage. Watford’s goalkeeper Egil Selvik, 28, along with defenders David Moller Wolfe (Wolves) and Sondre Langas (Derby County), all bowed out as Norway were edged out 2-1 by England after extra time in Miami on Saturday. Moller Wolfe, aged 24, was brought off after 90 minutes of the quarter-final and had started five of the Norwegians’ six matches at the tournament. Selvik and Langas, both 25, were unused substitutes in the decisive clash, having previously featured in only one match each—a 4-1 group-stage defeat by France.
Burnley forward Zeki Amdouni was unable to keep Switzerland alive in the tournament, coming on as an 86th-minute substitute and playing through extra time in their 3-1 loss to Argentina in Kansas City. The 25-year-old managed four appearances as a substitute throughout the competition but failed to find the back of the net.
