On the eve of the 2026 MLB Draft, Jay Johnson and LSU received a substantial surprise when Lucas Nawrocki, the Aledo, Texas outfielder and left-handed pitcher, announced on Friday night via Instagram that he would be withdrawing from the draft and enrolling at LSU. Nawrocki had already built a notable profile at the MLB Draft Combine, and Over the Slot’s Joe Doyle pegged him as a prospect who could command around $2 million from an MLB organization. He offers genuine two-way potential, featuring a fastball that comfortably sits in the 95 mph range from the left side and a slider that some scouts consider among the best for high schoolers. In addition, Nawrocki has displayed notable power in his bat, further amplifying his appeal as a two-way talent.
However, concerns remain regarding his physical projection. Standing at 5’11”, some scouts question whether Nawrocki will project as a everyday starter at the Major League level. The prevailing view is that he could developmentally evolve into a high-leverage left-handed reliever, a factor that likely influenced his decision to enroll at LSU rather than pursue the draft right away.
At LSU, Nawrocki will have the opportunity to contribute on both sides of the ball, but his immediate role appears to be in the bullpen. LSU’s lineup is largely established, yet the Tigers are in urgent need of additional left-handed pitching depth coming out of the bullpen. The team’s returning lefty relievers—Danny Lachenmayer, Cooper Williams, and Ethan Plogg—provide some stability, but Nawrocki’s arrival offers a clear pathway to immediate playing time in 2027. His presence gives LSU a potential bridge to bolster late-inning options while they navigate how best to utilize his dual talents.
Nawrocki isn’t the only high-profile recruit to opt for LSU over the draft this year. He joins Nathaneal Davis, an outfielder, and Braxton Beaty, another left-handed pitcher, as members of Jay Johnson’s 2026 class who chose to honor their LSU commitments and continue their development with the Tigers.
This update originally appeared on LSU Wire, highlighting Nawrocki as an Elite two-way prospect who elected to stay with LSU baseball, turning down the draft in favor of pursuing a longer-term plan with the program.
