Eliud Kipchoge Talks Winning Melbourne Marathon, the Buzz in NYC and the Joy of Seeing Sub-2

Eliud Kipchoge has retired from elite-level racing, but that hasn’t come with a moratorium on winning.
Turning 42 this week, the Kenyan great is coming off setting a new course record for the Melbourne Marathon for his first victory in three years. The race was the third stop of his world tour, an initiative that began this spring with plans to run seven marathons on seven continents over the course of two-and-a-half years while engaging with communities and raising $1 million for the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation.
“Three years is a long time,” Kipchoge told Footwear News on a Friday call while in town for the New York City Marathon. “But my purpose is to run and make people come out their doors to run. My purpose is people, so I think the more I win, the more I run well, the more people can come cheer me or join me.”
After running the race for the first time last year and earning his Six Star Medal for completing all six of the original World Marathon Majors, Kipchoge took his place on the other side of the barriers Sunday at the NYC Marathon to cheer on the runners.
