England icons back Barcelona move for Bayern Munich goal machine: ‘He deserves better than Bundesliga’

News surrounding Harry Kane’s future has dominated Barcelona transfer talk in recent weeks, with speculation linking the Bayern Munich striker to Camp Nou. In England, former players argued Kane could be better suited to a league with greater global reach for his achievements, sparking debate about his next move. Gary Neville and Michael Owen shared their perspectives on Kane’s potential, each offering a distinct view on where his career should head.
Gary Neville has backed Barca’s interest, saying he understands why a top club would want Kane. Appearing on Sky Sports (via Mundo Deportivo), Neville noted that elite teams are drawn to players who deliver consistent performances at the highest level. He emphasized Kane’s reliability and his status as one of the game’s most consistent scorers, arguing that Kane would help a club like Barcelona pursue major trophies. With one year left on his Bayern contract, the Kane-to-Barcelona chatter is unlikely to fade soon.
Meanwhile, Michael Owen questioned Kane’s move to Bayern in the first place. The former Ballon d’Or winner suggested the Bundesliga does not offer the platform needed to elevate Kane among England’s greatest-ever forwards, given Bayern’s domestic dominance. Owen argued that domestic titles with Bayern may not define Kane’s greatness and that if Bayern had achieved Champions League glory, the assessment might differ. He contended that Kane deserves a stage beyond Bayern’s typical domestic success and implied he would benefit from a new challenge that could enhance his legacy.
