England missing final piece of jigsaw – Kane

By admin — In News — July 17, 2026

England captain Harry Kane says the team are missing that final piece of the jigsaw and must find a way to improve after their 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions led in Atlanta but were ultimately edged out, with criticism directed at both the players and manager Thomas Tuchel for adopting too defensive a approach after going ahead.
Kane wrote on social media: “No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach. We were close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough. We’ve given everything over these last seven weeks and to fall short is hard to take. I know the expectations are high and rightly so; we’ve been knocking on the door for eight years now, but again we are missing that final piece of the jigsaw. That’s where we have to go away, process it and find a way to get better.”
Anthony Gordon had given England the lead after 55 minutes, yet the team subsequently sat back and invited pressure from their Argentine rivals, who struck twice late through Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez to seal a 2-1 victory. In the wake of the result, former England captain Wayne Rooney said Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive,” as England failed to reach a World Cup final for the first time since their triumph in 1966. Tuchel has also faced criticism for his defensive substitutions, with England completing the match with only 12% of possession after going ahead and allowing the second goal in stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes.
BBC Sport has heard from several sources that key players were disappointed by how the closing stages were handled, though Tuchel insisted the plan was not to drop deeper, saying it’s “maybe not in our DNA… to control the game and ball.” The discussion has fed into a wider debate about England’s balance of effort, spirit, and moments of quality, and whether there is all-round quality to match ambition at the sport’s highest level.
From Southgate to Tuchel, has anything really changed? England has long faced accusations of becoming overly defensive in crucial games. The issue echoed a familiar pattern from Gareth Southgate’s era, when they led 1-0 in the Euro 2021 final against Italy before conceding and losing on penalties. Under Southgate, England also exited a World Cup semi-final to Croatia in 2018 and were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Opta stats highlight a stubborn trend: since 1998, England have been eliminated every time they meet a top-10 ranked nation in the World Cup knockout rounds.
Kane, who has netted six goals in the tournament for Bayern Munich, added: “Going for glory doesn’t always mean you’ll get it. You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again, and that’s what we will do. There’s no other way but to keep believing and pushing.” England began their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 win, and the squad understands there is work to do if they want to reach another final and bring the trophy home.
