Much of the offseason chatter focused on the Detroit Lions shoring up their offensive line. Many observers expected the Lions to select an offensive tackle in the 2026 NFL Draft, and after the team released Taylor Decker, the need for a tackle seemed even more pressing. Indeed, the Lions wasted little time addressing that gap, selecting offensive tackle Blake Miller with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2026 draft. The expectation is that the Clemson product can step in as a Day 1 starter at right tackle, with Penei Sewell moving to left tackle. Miller was described during the draft process as a plug-and-play option, but that label invites examination.
In its 2026 roster rankings, ESPN identified its X-factor for Detroit’s upcoming season as rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller. The move to bolster right tackle followed the release of veteran Taylor Decker and the shift of Sewell to the left side, a need the Lions aimed to fill with Miller in the first round. Traditionally, rookie tackles struggle to meet expectations in their first season, even when they’re high draft picks. The question remains whether Miller can buck that trend and help keep the Lions’ tackle duo strong, giving the team a solid bookend combination on the O-line.
ESPN’s assessment suggests Miller could be a defining piece for Detroit’s line, a role that could influence how the entire unit performs. Detroit also added veteran Larry Borom on a one-year, $5 million free-agent deal, but the prevailing belief is that Miller will ultimately win the job at right tackle. If the Lions are to achieve their goals this season, much hinges on Miller proving to be the dependable starter at that position.
Miller’s durability and consistency are well-documented. At Clemson, he was an iron man, starting a school-record 54 consecutive games—53 of them at right tackle—and compiling a remarkable 3,778 snaps from scrimmage. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 320 pounds, he brings prototype NFL size to the table. His arm length, measured at 34 1/4 inches at the NFL Scouting Combine, adds to his appeal as a right tackle who can handle edge pressure.
While some might have expected another contributor at safety or cornerback to emerge as the X-factor for 2026, Miller’s selection provides a clear path to addressing Detroit’s most urgent front-five need. If he performs at the expected level, Miller could become the focal point of the Lions’ improved pass protection and run blocking.
