​Eugenio Suárez and JJ Bleday have been non-factors for the Cincinnati Reds over the past half of a month. Both are hitting just above .170 in their last 15 games, with a combined 17 hits in their last 99 at-bats.Suárez was signed this offseason as one of the biggest free-agent deal the Reds have signed since the 2020 offseason, and the amount of disappointment has been unavoidable. The power numbers haven’t been there whatsoever, with just 16 home runs, and he has struck out 125 times in 86 games, leading the team by eight despite playing in 12 fewer games than the player with the second-most strikeouts, Elly De La Cruz.With a mutual option coming this offseason, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that Eugenio Suárez will be playing elsewhere next season. The Reds will be on the hook for more than $15 million for Suárez next season if he is brought back. He was a trade candidate at the deadline, but Nick Krall only shipped out Nate Lowe and Caleb Ferguson, trying to keep together a roster that could compete in the second half of the season.JJ Bleday has also struggled. He started the season off red hot and proved that Krall’s small investment to bring in the former first-round pick was a wise one. He was hitting .301 on June 1 with 10 home runs and 27 runs batted in with a 1.053 OPS. He was an All-Star candidate at the time, but all of his offensive numbers started to slowly dwindle.By the end of June, Bleday was hitting .238 with an .842 OPS. He hit just four home runs in June with just 11 runs batted in. He’s now hitting .225 with just five hits and one home run in his last eight games. For much of the season, many, including me, thought the Reds had stumbled upon a corner outfielder of the future. Now, that might be in question. No truly contending team can trot out an offense-oriented corner outfielder whose career batting average is .217.As the Reds head into the 2027 offseason, moving on from both Bleday and Suárez seems increasingly necessary. Other outfielders like Hector Rodriguez, Dane Myers and Blake Dunn deserve the at-bats, or at least the privilege to be gambled on by the Reds front office.Surrounding Sal Stewart and Elly De La Cruz with more offensive help in his seemingly two-year window is of the highest importance. Cincinnati needs to stop taking chances and spend, as they should have with Kyle Schwarber.
