Fact Check: FAKE Video Shows Fan Running Onto Field To Hug Messi At The World Cup — It’s AI

By admin — In yahoo — June 30, 2026

Lead Stories debunked the claim that a video shows a fan running onto the field to hug Lionel Messi at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. An AI-detection tool rated the video as about 51.7% likely to be AI-generated, with several glitches indicating it was AI-made. There were no credible news reports supporting the incident. The claim originated in a June 28, 2026 video post on X by @DAMIADENUGA, which described a dramatic scene of a fan breaching security to hug Messi while he remained calm and was escorted away. Screenshots circulating with the post showed inconsistencies, such as Messi’s jersey number fluctuating between 20 and 10, security personnel already on the field as a woman approaches Messi, an advertising panel with ineligible writing, and a teammate pictured in black shorts instead of white. While fans sometimes run onto the pitch in football matches, the absence of corroborating coverage from Google News and Yahoo News makes the claim unreliable.
