Do viral screenshots claiming that Wikipedia asserts French referee François Letexier is Jewish are false. After the Egypt–Argentina FIFA World Cup match on July 7, 2026, edits to Letexier’s Wikipedia page did not reference credible sources supporting the idea that he was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family. Lead Stories found no publicly available information indicating that Letexier grew up in such a background. The claim originated in a July 8, 2026 post on X by @doctor_rahmeh, which opened with a provocative line about the French referee’s early life being “scrubbed” from Wikipedia and included a collage of two screenshots of a Wikipedia page. One screenshot, dated July 7, 2026, showed an “Early life and background” section claiming Letexier was born on 23 April 1989 in Bédée, Brittany, into an Orthodox Jewish family. The other part of the collage, dated July 8, 2026, did not include any mention of connections to an Orthodox Jewish family and simply presented standard biographical details.
Letexier, who officiated the World Cup match for Egypt’s game against Argentina, faced controversy over officiating in the aftermath, with the Egyptian Football Association alleging unfair officiating (these claims are archived). The page on Letexier that existed before the match, as captured by the Internet Archive on June 22, 2026 (with a June 17, 2026 edit), contained no “early life and background” section and did not mention an Orthodox Jewish upbringing. Edits in the hours after Egypt’s defeat introduced unfounded allegations of corruption and, later, an insult in Portuguese that meant “known for being the worst judge who ever lived,” which also lacked sourcing. The claim about a Jewish connection appeared in an added note on July 8, 2026 that linked to a 2017 French article from Le Point, archived online; however, the Le Point piece was a career-focused profile of Letexier and did not discuss his religion or Jewish heritage. Lead Stories reviewed the oldest archived version of that Le Point article and found no mention of Letexier’s Jewishness. Additionally, multiple versions of the Wikipedia entry making the Jewish-connection claim linked to no verifiable sources, as shown by archived versions.
In short, there is no reliable evidence that Letexier’s Wikipedia page or any credible source confirms he grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family. The most widely circulated posts surrounding the claim were not supported by credible citations, and independent checks of archived versions of the article and linked sources do not corroborate the assertion. The misinformation appears to have stemmed from edited screenshots and unsourced statements circulated shortly after the World Cup match, rather than from verifiable biographical information.
