A viral claim suggesting that FIFA President Gianni Infantino reacted to Egypt’s goal during a July 2026 World Cup match is not accurate. The clip circulating online was miscaptioned and actually predates that particular game, featuring footage from a different 2026 World Cup encounter.
The claim originated in a post on X by user @voovh on July 7, 2026, which included an automatically translated Arabic caption reading: “Strange!!! FIFA president’s reaction after Egypt’s goal 🇪🇬!!” The post, archived for reference, showed a 20-second video in which a man resembling Infantino sat in a stadium among other officials. At the 0:15 mark, he appears to clap once and then bring a hand to his mouth as others around him celebrate a goal.
The miscaption spread to English-language posts as well, amplified by other outlets. One such source was Le 360, a media organization whose post appeared on Instagram on June 29, 2026. Le 360 presents itself as a Moroccan general-interest digital media outlet and has links to media aligned with Morocco’s official positions, according to ownership analyses. The French caption accompanying Le 360’s post described an entirely different moment: “L’explosion de joie de Houssine Kharja 🇲🇦 après la qualification des Lions de l’Atlas pour les huitièmes de finale.” Translated, this stated that Houssine Kharja’s joy erupted after Morocco’s Atlas Lions advanced to the round of 16. The description attached to the video referenced Morocco’s national team, sometimes called the Atlas Lions, and identified the man in the white shirt jumping next to Infantino as Houssine Kharja, a former Moroccan footballer.
Crucially, the caption and context of that Le 360 post did not mention Egypt, and when the video was published by the outlet’s Instagram account, Morocco was playing the Netherlands, not Egypt. The video itself included a banner that read “Copa Mundial” (World Cup) during the Morocco–Netherlands game, which took place in Mexico, a detail that aligns with the event’s geographic setting shown in the footage. A Reuters photo from the Morocco–Netherlands match captured the same individuals in the broadcast booth, corroborating the timing and participants in that moment.
In sum, the video clip did not capture Infantino reacting to Egypt’s goal against Argentina on July 7, 2026. It actually depicts a different moment from a Morocco–Netherlands game, captured during a broadcast in Mexico, with the scene including Houssine Kharja and other officials in a stadium booth. The claim linking Infantino’s reaction to an Egypt–Argentina goal is a miscaptioned artifact that circulated across social platforms, aided by initial postings and translations that did not reflect the actual context of the footage. The timeline and sources, including archived posts and Reuters imagery, support that the footage predates the Egypt–Argentina match and aligns with the Morocco–Netherlands encounter.
