​Growing up, Bruin Agbayani couldn’t believe how Mets fans treated his father, Benny.Benny, of course, quickly established himself as a fan favorite as he broke into the league with the club over a four-year tenure spanning from 1998-2001. Now, the younger Agbayani could have the chance to experience that for himself. Bruin was among the Mets’ first additions in their trade deadline sell-off, as he was acquired from the Twins as part of the package for lefty A.J. Minter late Thursday night. Less than 24 hours after the deal was completed, Benny took some time to meet with the media to share his excitement over seeing his son follow in his footsteps. “I was shocked, I honestly didn’t even think he was going to get traded,” he said. “It means a lot — I think it’s a great opportunity for him — it’s great to see him wearing a Mets jersey and continuing the legacy.”Benny revealed that Bruin had been hoping to land with the only organization he’d known growing up when he was first coming out of St. Louis High School in Honolulu during the 2025 Draft. The Mets did show some interest in the young middle infielder during the pre-draft process, but he ended up being selected by the Twins with a sixth-round pick.Agbayani briefly displayed his potential, but was limited to just 15 games before being sidelined with a shoulder injury, which he’s still working his way back from. When he is eventually ready, he’s expected to begin his time with High-A St. Lucie. Though it may be a while before the 19-year-old even comes close to sniffing the big-league level, the elder Agbayani is hoping he’ll be able to do it here in the Big Apple. “I think he’ll be one of those great players for New York.”
