All set for formal steps,” Romano added.SPORT wrote that Freire was “about to experience one of the most special birthdays of his life”. “The Portuguese striker turns 16 this Saturday and he will do so with a very special gift: to officially become a new FC Barcelona player,” SPORT explained, noting that Freire has convinced the coaches in La Masia with his performances forcing the club to incorporate him as a permanent part of the Juvenil B U-18 set up.As hinted, Freire has had to wait until he turns 16 to sign. With a Portuguese passport, however, he can do that effortlessly without red tape getting in the way. Freire has made the most of the chance offered to him upon being scouted at Racing FC in Luxembourg. While on trial, he scored a number of goals in friendlies, in addition to winning against Real Madrid.Freire will begin his official journey in Catalunya with the U-18 Juvenil B outfit, who on Saturday face Europa in their league debut as a number of grassroots competitions kick off in the region.FC Barcelona continues to invest in youthRather than only splash out on established names, Barca continues to invest in the potential stars of tomorrow such as Jesse Bisiwu and now Freire.At the moment, the Portuguese is still three steps away from Hansi Flick’s first team. Leapfrogging certain ones is possible, but he’ll likely have to advance to the Juvenil U-19s and Barca Atletic before getting the chance to reach the elite.
