Manchester United are continuing their search for a marquee midfielder for manager Michael Carrick, with negotiations still ongoing for their top target Mateus Fernandes, despite strong competition from Tottenham Hotspur. West Ham’s firm £85m valuation for the 21-year-old Portuguese has kept United exploring additional options, and The Athletic reports the club are assessing other midfield possibilities.
In another development, United have reportedly enquired about Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, with the club believed to have asked about his availability this summer. The Germany international, who impressed at the World Cup and is a former Manchester City academy product, is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League. Standing at 6ft 3in, Nmecha is praised for his physical presence, technical strength, and exceptional ball-carrying ability, with Lothar Matthäus describing him as one of the world’s best box-to-box midfielders.
United’s recruitment chief Christopher Vivell is said to be in close contact with Nmecha’s representatives, but Dortmund have shown reluctance to let him go, having only renewed his contract in March. His new deal includes a release clause set at €80m for 2027.
The Athletic also notes that United are weighing up other targets, including Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, as well as Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton. It seems Manchester United are keeping their options open while aiming to secure a swift decision, rather than allowing selling clubs to dictate terms.
