Felix Okpara Flashes for Washington Wizards in Summer League

By admin — In News — July 16, 2026

When the Washington Wizards traded two second round picks to move up for Felix Okpara, they knew the exact player they’d be getting — a switchable, versatile and athletic rim protector who plays above the rim but has his fair share of flaws.Fast forward a few weeks later, and Okpara has played in three Summer League games where those flaws and strengths have been displayed.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhile Okpara hasn’t posted a flashy stat line that jumps off the box score, he has provided Washington a strong defensive anchor throughout Summer League. However, many still hold concerns as to whether or not Okpara is fit to get legit minutes on an NBA roster, so let’s dissect Okpara’s summer and if he should get a spot on Washington’s 15 man roster.© Brianna Paciorka/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesThrough three games in Summer League, Okpara has averaged 6.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.3 BPG.You could attribute Okpara’s moderate offensive production to multiple things, such as his raw and unpolished offensive skillset, lack of playmakers on Washington’s Summer League roster, or even bad luck.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhile all could be true, Okpara’s stat line has not done him any justice as I believe he’s been more impressive than what the box scores say.One thing that has really stood out to me is Okpara’s defensive versatility and athleticism, specifically inside the paint. While I expected Okpara to provide Washington with some much needed shot blocking and versatility, it’s encouraging to see those skills translate to the next level. What’s been expected out of Okpara this summer is exactly what he has displayed, which I believe to be more encouraging than not. However, it is upsetting to see Okpara struggle on both the offensive and defensive glass.Although Okpara was not known for his rebounding in college, his inability to track, locate and come down with rebounds has been very concerning so far, especially given his raw and unique athleticism. Okpara needs to prove that he can be at least an average rebounder in the NBA in order for him to stick on Washington’s roster.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHowever, Washington believes that Okpara has a good enough skillset that with proper development and training, he could become a strong rotational player off Washington’s bench for the future. With that being said, Okpara flashed enough talent throughout Summer League to give Washington’s front office and fans hope that selecting him in the second round was worth it. How much he bounces between the Wizards and Capital City Go-Go as the final two-way player will be a question for the 2026-27 regular season to answer, but the tools to impact the frontcourt rotation flashed this week.Wizards Roundtable also offers a fan community.
