Fernando Mendoza, whose mother, Elsa, lives with multiple sclerosis, made a transformative gift of 500,000 dollars to support multiple sclerosis stem cell research at the University of Miami Health System and the UM Miller School of Medicine. The donation is intended to help finance a pioneering stem cell transplantation trial at UM, the local news outlet WSVN reported on July 9.
Mendoza spoke with WSVN about the source of his resilience, saying, “You know, people sometimes ask me where my resiliency comes from, and the answer is not football. It’s always been my mom.” He has previously described the moment he accepted the Heisman Trophy as recognizing a magnitude of toughness his mother demonstrates—quiet, steadfast, and hopeful. He added that his mother’s strength exemplifies what real toughness looks like.
Elsa Mendoza and her husband, Fernando Mendoza Sr., are also parents to Alberto and Max. Elsa was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when their children were younger, though she did not share the diagnosis with them until 2020, once her symptoms became more apparent. Over the years, her health challenges have occasionally prevented her from attending some of Fernando’s games.
When Fernando was drafted into the NFL, he chose not to attend the formal event in Pittsburgh in person so he could remain with his family. He told Rich Eisen on SportsCenter that he was excited to see most of the players cross the stage, but his mother and family preferred to celebrate at home, a decision that felt more right given their circumstances. Elsa attended the draft night and later was present to witness her son help lead the Indiana Hoosiers to a National Championship victory in January 2026, a tournament that was held in Miami.
Fernando Mendoza’s bond with his mother has been a constant source of motivation. In a December 2025 interview with People, he described his mother as an “unwavering” presence whose optimism helps him navigate each day, calling her an inspiration and expressing gratitude for having someone so special in his life. His dream of playing in the NFL has long been central to his ambitions, and his success has aligned with his wish to honor his mother through generosity and progress in medical science. Mendoza was selected first overall by the Raiders in the 2026 NFL Draft, a milestone he has pursued with the same determination his mother has modeled for him.
