Ferrari Bringing Tantalizing Engine Upgrades After Silverstone Win

Scuderia Ferrari is crafting one of the most intriguing cars on the Formula 1 grid thanks to its strong emphasis on aerodynamic development. While the spotlight often centers on power units as the primary differentiator, other components of the car have undergone substantial changes as well, representing an underexploited avenue for improvement. Ferrari, even as it trails Mercedes in engine performance, has pushed forward with an aggressive program of vehicle development, rolling out upgrade after upgrade. Among these enhancements, the Italian team introduced the famed “Macarena” wing, a design that rotates into activation and has drawn considerable attention for its distinctive approach.
On May 3, 2026, in Miami Gardens, Florida, crew members prepared Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc’s car ahead of the Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome. The scene underscored Ferrari’s ongoing efforts to maximize performance through rapid, visible upgrades.
Despite the barrage of aggressive improvements, Ferrari still appears to be lagging behind Mercedes, whose power unit remains among the most efficient and consistently high-performing in the sport. To help teams close the gap to the leading power units, the FIA has granted additional development time and resources. Among those benefiting is Ferrari, which currently sits around 4% off the benchmark set by Red Bull.
With these extra resources at its disposal, Ferrari’s technical director Enrico Gualtieri is said to have set ambitious goals for the ADUO project, aiming to deliver tangible gains in the near term. According to Giuliano Duschessa, writing for AutoRacer IT, the plan includes a new turbocharger slated to be introduced as part of the ADUO 2 package. The upgrade is expected to be ready within five Grands Prix, with the Madrid round targeted for the debut of the refreshed configuration. This development would mark one of the most significant evolutions for Ferrari’s power unit, designed to enhance overall efficiency and sustain the performance gains enabled by the FIA’s regulatory development allowances.
Simultaneously, discussions within Ferrari indicate that bench development on a future ADUO power unit intended for 2027 has already begun. This demonstrates the team’s willingness to pursue progress both in the current season and in the next generation of engines, ensuring that Ferrari advances alongside or even ahead of its rivals.
If Ferrari can translate these ambitions into meaningful on-track gains, the team could emerge with a more complete car than Mercedes. The combination of aerodynamic refinements, resilient durability, and a more efficient power unit could create a competitive package capable of challenging the reigning champions. As Ferrari presses forward with its latest push, the narrative in the paddock centers on whether these strategic upgrades will deliver the necessary performance delta to reshape the championship picture.
