FIFA gives England’s Jarell Quansah two-game ban for red card

FIFA issued a two-game ban on England right back Jarell Quansah following the red card he received against Mexico in the World Cup, the governing body confirmed on Thursday. The red card came in the 54th minute of England’s 3-2 Round of 16 victory in Mexico City, after Quansah committed a foul on Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo. During the tackle, Quansah’s right shoe remained elevated, exposing his studs as they connected with Gallardo’s left leg.
According to FIFA, the suspension “will be served in the upcoming match(es) of the representative team of England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and in accordance with art. 69 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.” England’s immediate next assignment is a quarterfinal against Norway, scheduled for 5 p.m. EDT Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida. If England advances to the semifinals, Quansah would also be unavailable for a potential semifinal versus Argentina or Switzerland.
Quansah had been stepping in for first-choice defender Reece James, who was sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained during England’s second group-stage match, a 0-0 draw with Ghana on June 23 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. That injury sidelined James for the Three Lions’ subsequent three fixtures against Panama, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mexico. In the tournament’s first five games for England, a host of players lined up in defense, including Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, and D.J. Spence. John Stones, Dan Burn, and Trevoh Chalobah also contributed defensively in various appearances.
Training notes from Wednesday indicated further disruption for England’s defensive options, as James, Guehi, and Declan Rice all missed a session with the rest of the squad. The quarterfinal winner between Norway and England will advance to a semifinal on the following Wednesday in Atlanta, where they would face either Argentina or Switzerland.
This development adds another layer to England’s World Cup campaign, already marked by defensive reshuffles and injuries. For England, the immediate focus remains on Thursday’s quarterfinal tie and, should they advance, the potential challenges of a semifinal against a top-tier opponent. Quansah’s absence could necessitate tactical adjustments as England looks to navigate the remaining knockout rounds with a significantly shortened squad in the wake of the suspension.
