FIFA turns down France’s request to rescind Michael Olise’s controversial yellow card

France’s bid to rescind Michael Olise’s unjustified yellow card from Les Bleus’ World Cup last-16 narrow victory over Paraguay (1-0) has been rejected by FIFA. The Bayern Munich attacker, who was shown a caution by Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev following an apparent altercation with Paraguay’s Matias Galarza, was booked after a sequence that replays indicate showed Olise merely tugging at Galarza’s shirt as Galarza went to the ground, theatrically selling contact as if struck in the face. That sequence has been cited as one of the many contentious officiating calls that night, with critics labeling the referee’s decisions as baffling.
In France, expectations had been high that the French Football Federation (FFF) could overturn the booking given the perceived incongruity of the incident and Tantashev’s apparent misjudgment. The FFF argued that there had been a factual error in the referee’s assessment and that Olise did not commit an offense worthy of a yellow card. The decision to uphold the card was announced after FIFA reviewed the matter, with Didier Deschamps and the French camp awaiting the outcome.
Deschamps addressed the issue in a pre-match press conference, stating that FIFA’s decision would stand and that Olise’s yellow card would remain on the record. “We received FIFA’s decision this morning,” the France coach confirmed. The ruling leaves France with a potential headache for their upcoming fixtures: if Olise picks up another yellow card in the match against Morocco, he would incur a one-match ban, potentially sidelining him for a semi-final if France advance against either Belgium or Spain.
The controversy highlights broader concerns about officiating in the tournament and the impact it can have on team selection and strategy. France will now have to plan for the possibility of missing Olise in a potential knockout round, depending on how disciplinary sanctions unfold and whether any further matches could be affected by accumulated bookings. In the aftermath of the decision, attention, as ever, turns to how teams adapt to officiating standards and how refereeing interpretations influence the progression of a high-stakes World Cup campaign.
