   ​October is underway and the fall sports calendar is heating up.Gulf Breeze girls volleyball staked its claim as the top team in the Pensacola area by sweeping Pensacola Catholic on Sept. 30. Jay continued to show it’s a team to beat in the Rural classification, sweeping Baker at home on Oct. 1. This is the last week of regular season volleyball before district tournaments begin Oct. 12.Area golf teams competed at the Miracle Strip Invitational in Fort Walton Beach on Sept. 28, where Navarre finished fourth to lead the area.Local cross country teams battled it out at the Wildcat Invitational on Oct. 3, with Pace leading the area by finishing runner-up to Niceville.West Florida and Navarre swimming competed at the Panama City Beach High School Invitational the same day, with the Jaguars finishing fourth and the Raiders eighth.Submit videos for our news Plays of the Month seriesNow it’s time to meet the nominees for this week’s Florida Power & Light PNJ Girls Athlete of the Week. Gulf Breeze swimming’s Grace Walen won the award, lapping the competition with 82.8 percent of the vote. Dolphins’ swimmers swept the awards this week, with Arthur Phillips winning the boys award.Now it’s time to make your voice heard again. Voting closes at 11 a.m Saturday, and the winners will be announced each Monday after the poll closes. Each weekly winner will be awarded a PNJ Athlete of the Week shirt provided by BSN SPORTS. An athlete can only win one time per season.Nominees will be accepted via phone or email, but the poll is decided by PNJ staff. Send nominations by Sunday night.
