Former Buckeyes’ Star Will Howard Holding the QB2 Keys in Pittsburgh

Will Howard’s situation in Pittsburgh is a very fascinating one, to put it lightly. There are three guys jockeying for the second quarterback position for 2026, but more importantly, for the lead spot for 2027 after Aaron Rodgers retires from the NFL.This offseason and this training camp are huge for Howard as he has put himself in a solid position, but the work has to be done from here.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementReports coming out of Pittsburgh are that the second quarterback position is “Howard’s to lose,” and he could put a strong grip on the position with a good camp. The former Buckeye is in a competition with Mason Rudolph, who has been in Pittsburgh for eight seasons now, but has pretty much just been a career backup. He was the second in command at the end of Ben Roethlisberger’s time before getting a shot at the starting job in 2019.Other than that season, Rudolph has gotten a handful of spot starts throughout his time. The sand is running out of his hourglass as Howard is a less expensive option and potentially brings more to the table.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe other challenger is 2026 draft pick Drew Allar. The Steelers selected Allar as a lottery ticket in the fourth round of the 2026 Draft. Allar has been said to be very far off from playing any meaningful snaps, but a high investment in the position, compared to the sixth-round pick that Howard was, is another part of the competition. For Howard, it is believed that he is the perfect culture guy, especially for that Pittsburgh locker room. In their first year together, Aaron Rodgers really pulled Howard under his wing and forced him to be a leader in the locker room.Buckeyes Football 8 Weeks Away | FB Fantasy Football | FPI Rankings | Dominating Recruiting Trail Buckeyes Football 8 Weeks Away | FB Fantasy Football | FPI Rankings | Dominating Recruiting Trail Ohio State football is just eight Saturdays away, and the Buckeyes are just three weeks away from the beginning of fall camp. He lacks the consistent arm strength that is necessary at this level, and while he is accurate, he isn’t quite NFL-accurate.That’s not to say that he can’t get there, but there is some work to be done. If Howard can show that he has made the proper improvements, then he could force the Steelers’ hand and lock himself in as QB2.This Training Camp is the biggest couple of weeks for the future of his NFL career.Buckeye Roundtable also offers a fan community and message board.
