Former Lady Vols assistant Roman Tubner joining Louisville women’s basketball staff

Former Lady Vols basketball assistant coach Roman Tubner is reportedly joining Louisville women’s basketball staff, according to a July 10 On3 report. Neither Tubner nor Louisville has issued an official announcement yet, but clues are mounting: Tubner’s Instagram bio now reads “Louisville WBB,” and his X cover photo features a Louisville women’s basketball graphic. Tubner was dismissed in April after spending two seasons on coach Kim Caldwell’s staff.
Caldwell issued a statement on April 2 following the news, confirming that the program had “parted ways” with Tubner. “I want to thank Coach Tubner for his contributions to our program during the past two seasons,” Caldwell said. “We wish him the very best moving forward.”
Tubner’s departure comes as he reconnects with a familiar face from his time at Tennessee: former Lady Vol Deniya Prawl transferred to Louisville in April. Tennessee’s roster, meanwhile, faced substantial turnover, with all eight player options for a potential return entering the transfer portal after the Lady Vols finished 16-14 last season.
Prior to joining Caldwell in 2024, Tubner spent three seasons on the Alabama women’s basketball staff, culminating as an associate head coach in his final year with the Tide. He had also interviewed for the head coaching job at Kennesaw State, per a USA TODAY report, but the position ultimately went to Tianni Kelly on March 30. According to Tennessee’s salary database, Tubner earned $250,000 annually on Caldwell’s staff. He was one of two assistants Caldwell brought from other SEC programs; the other was Gabe Lazo from Mississippi State. Lazo resigned from Tennessee in March and later joined LSU.
SinceTubner’s departure, Caldwell has filled open roles on her staff with new hires, including former Florida State associate head coach Bill Ferrara and former Georgia assistant Isoken Uzamere. Tubner’s coaching journey has included stops at Ball State (2021-22), UNC Wilmington (2019-20), Indiana State (2018-19), Austin Peay (2017-18), Arkansas Tech (2014-17), and Arkansas-Monticello (2013-14) at the Division II level. He began his career as a graduate assistant for the Arkansas-Monticello men’s basketball program before moving into women’s basketball. A Montgomery, Alabama native, Tubner played at Centenary from 2008-11.
