With LIV Golf’s future hanging in the balance, its players may be contemplating a return to the PGA Tour. This year, the Saudi Public Investment Fund pulled its backing, leaving LIV scrambling to secure new investors. If fresh funding isn’t secured for the next season and beyond, the circuit risks a swift, complete collapse. At present, players face a one-year suspension from the PGA Tour after their last LIV event, meaning that stars like Jon Rahm would have to wait a full 12 months to return if LIV were to fold.
Nonetheless, a former LIV participant has outlined a potential path back to the PGA Tour after departing the league early, signaling his intent to rejoin the PGA Tour ranks. Eugenio Chacarra joined LIV Golf in 2022, but after three seasons chose to part ways with the league and instead obtain membership on the DP World Tour. Since switching, he has captured three wins on that circuit and appears poised to pursue PGA Tour status once again. In an interview with Flushing It, Chacarra said he has wanted to return to the PGA Tour all year long.
“There’s still a whole season left and a lot of great players, but I’m more hungry than ever,” he said. “I want to keep getting better. I want to keep playing well, I want to keep seeing my game improve. I want to keep competing against the best players in the world and prove to the world, to myself, and to my team that I can match them.”
He added that the PGA Tour has long been his main goal and the season’s target since he was a child, and he would relish playing in its “theatre.” Yet he emphasized the need to remain focused and deliver strong performances for the remainder of the year. Chacarra’s ambitions extend beyond immediate results; he aims to evaluate new objectives as his form remains solid and his world ranking climbs.
Having reached 58th in the world rankings, he outlined a plan to finish the year inside the top 50 so he can qualify for all four majors next year, as well as the Ryder Cup. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but asserted that adding fresh targets could galvanize his team to stay hungry and push for collective success. “I’ve got a long way to go, and I can always improve,” he said. “To compete with Scottie, Rory, and the rest of the top players, you need to be 100% in every aspect of your game. I’m playing well, but there is a long road ahead. I’m eager to keep working.”
Chacarra’s appetite for additional progress appears to be confirmed this week as he headlines the Scottish Open field alongside Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm. The event marks a crucial test in his season as he prepares for a second major challenge at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next week, where he will seek to measure his game against the world’s elite once more.
As LIV Golf navigates its uncertain future, players like Chacarra are mapping a potential route back to the PGA Tour, where a return would hinge on maintaining form, climbing the world rankings, and meeting the Tour’s eligibility criteria. The evolving landscape makes for a compelling backdrop as the sport’s pro ranks consider which path to pursue for the next phase of their careers, whether that means continuing with LIV, returning to the PGA Tour, or seeking status through other routes on the global stage.
