Former MSU AD J Batt buyout, start date at Kentucky announced

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

We now have an official buyout amount and start date for when former Michigan State athletic director J. Batt will begin his duties with his new employer. Kentucky announced the exact start date for Batt on Thursday, confirming that he will officially assume the role on July 28. In addition, Kentucky disclosed a total buyout payment of $3.95 million to Michigan State as part of Batt’s departure. This figure reflects a settlement tied to the terms of his contract, which initially stipulated that Michigan State would receive $5 million because the Spartans retained president Kevin Guskiewicz earlier this week. If Guskiewicz had left for Clemson as originally planned, Kentucky would have paid only $2.5 million as part of Batt’s buyout.
Batt publicly announced his intention to leave Michigan State for Kentucky last week, just one year after he took over as the Spartans’ athletic director. This move marks a rapid transition in Batt’s leadership within college athletics and sets the stage for the next chapter of Kentucky’s athletic program under his direction.
