Texas A&M’s basketball program appears solid under the leadership of coach Bucky McMillan, who guided the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. That debut featured an opening-round win over Saint Mary’s before a setback against Houston in the Round of 32. After facing a substantial turnover in his initial roster, led by senior forward Rashaun Agee, McMillan has replenished the team this offseason with seven additions from the transfer portal. On paper, this marks the most talented Texas A&M roster in more than two decades, highlighted by former Kansas State shooting guard PJ Haggerty, who logged roughly 24 points per game last season. The squad also features NBA G League guard Bryson Warren, who has yet to receive a waiver to play for the Aggies this fall, though all indications suggest he will be eligible to participate in mid-November.
Texas A&M’s returnees include forward Mackenzie Mgbako, who was limited to seven games last season, with forwards Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson continuing to develop and shine in their reserve roles. The roster is further bolstered by transfer forwards Cade Phillips and Jalen Shelley, along with guards Tyshawn Archie, Lukas Well, and Jalen Reece. With this blend of experience and fresh talent, the Aggies’ odds of returning to the NCAA Tournament remain strong and plausible for the new season.
This week brought a high-profile, if unofficial, visit to College Station: former NBA star guard Isaiah Thomas, who was once mentioned in MVP conversations during his Boston Celtics days in 2017, was spotted in town on Wednesday and worked out with the 2026-2027 Texas A&M roster. While the age difference is notable, every current Aggie player is likely aware of Thomas, who at 5’9″ became a two-time All-Star and logged nearly 14 seasons in the NBA, finishing his career with a scoring average of 17.5 points per game. Thomas currently serves as a scout for the Celtics, making it unsurprising that he took time to observe and practice with the talented Aggie basketball squad.
