Former Rutgers football captain and defensive end Jamil Merrell died yesterday at the age of 36, according to a social media post by his brother Jamal. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Merrell played for Rutgers from 2009 to 2013 and served as a captain during his tenure. He shared the field with his brother and logged playing time under both Greg Schiano, during his first stint as head coach, and former Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood.
After leaving Rutgers, Merrell continued his football career, earning a spot on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad before spending several seasons in the Arena Football League. Jamal released a heartfelt tribute on Facebook to honor his brother, describing the moment they faced together and the impact Jamil had on those who knew him.
In his post, Jamal spoke of sitting beside his twin brother as they faced one of life’s hardest moments, surrounded by family, and of Jamil peacefully transitioning to be with God. He recalled how Jamil, before passing, told him that it was time to level up and that everything down here was complete. Jamal said those words would stay with him for the rest of his life.
He described Jamil as someone who lived with a whole-hearted love, who spoke truth even when it was difficult, and who would give you the shirt off his back. Jamal said Jamil didn’t just live life—he poured himself into it. He remembered a brother who fought without complaint, who never quit, and who stood firm through every challenge. Jamal called Jamil a true soldier and a true warrior who gave his all until his last breath.
Jamal conveyed his sorrow and pride in equal measure, noting that although his heart was broken, he found peace in the belief that Jamil was finally free from pain—no more suffering, no more hospital visits, just peace. He expressed a love that words could scarcely capture and a sense that a part of him would always be missing until they were reunited.
In the shared message, Jamal thanked the twin for every laugh, every argument, every memory, every lesson, and every moment they had together. He acknowledged Jamil’s courage in facing illness, praising his resilience and tenacity and describing him as a true warrior who fought with every ounce of strength until the end.
Jamal encouraged readers to keep supporting Jamil’s legacy, expressing gratitude for the bond they shared as twins from birth and promising to continue honoring them both until the day they are reunited. He offered prayers for their family and asked for continued support as they navigate this immense loss.
As fans and supporters reflect on Jamil Merrell’s life, they remember a player who contributed to Rutgers football with leadership and grit, and a brother whose public tribute underscored the deep bond they shared. The Merrell family’s outpouring of love and grief highlights the enduring impact Jamil had on teammates, family, and friends, and the sense of loss felt by a community that watched him grow from a Rutgers captain into a professional athlete and a devoted brother. Our thoughts remain with Jamal Merrell and the entire Merrell family during this difficult time.
