Former Sacramento State football offensive lineman Ivan Garza died Wednesday from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle, the Hornets program announced on social media. He was 25 years old. Garza wore the Hornets uniform from 2019 to 2023, redshirting as a freshman and later appearing in 38 games across three seasons, with 36 starts at either left or right tackle. Standing 6-foot-5, Garza helped Sacramento State win two Big Sky championships in 2021 and 2022 and earned honorable mention all-Big Sky honors in 2023. He played at Sacramento State after graduating from Robert F. Kennedy High School in Delano, California.
“Rest in peace, Ivan Garza,” the Sacramento State football program stated. “We extend our deepest condolences to Ivan’s friends and family. He will be remembered as a wonderful teammate, player, and Hornet.”
Police, via KGET in Bakersfield, reported that Garza was crossing a road in his hometown of Delano around 4 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver, a 32-year-old woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, according to KTXL in Sacramento. Garza was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Thunderbird Family honored Garza with a tribute on Facebook, noting that the high school football program mourns the loss of a young man “too soon.” The statement described him as more than an athlete: “Beyond his accomplishments on the football field, Ivan will be remembered for the person he was—a gentle giant with a kind heart, an infectious smile, and a genuine love for his family, friends, teammates, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.”
Garza’s GoFundMe page, created to support his mother, Sandra, echoed those sentiments in a message from his family: “Ivan touched so many lives with his character, leadership, and uplifting spirit.” The family’s message highlighted his love for his family and friends, and his commitment to his teammates and community.
Officials indicated the crash remains under investigation, with police continuing to gather information as they review the events that led to Garza’s death. The Sacramento State community, his friends, teammates, and supporters nationwide continue to remember a young man whose on-field accomplishments were matched by his character off the field. Garza’s legacy as a dedicated athlete and a compassionate, generous person endures in the memories of those who knew him and in the impact he had on his team and community.
